Our Methodology

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

We prioritise communication skills on all our intensive courses so that students practise speaking and listening directly in the target language as much as possible, training their ear to native accents and learning correct pronunciation.
We encourage group discussions as much as possible on a range of relevant topics, and will set different oral tasks for them to complete. Pupils will listen to and watch both formal and informal recordings and videos to improve their skills and practise either the grammar and vocabulary or the technical language appropriate to their level and subject.

GRAMMAR APPROACH

Our approach to teaching grammar is to break down each point and make it universally comprehensible without overwhelming or boring our students. We explain vocabulary on all our intensive courses using clear lists, definitions and examples, with practical and fun exercises, to test pupils’ assimilation.

READING COMPREHENSION and Written expression

Reading tasks will further check this assimilation, and students will complete exercises to assess their comprehension of the text, discussing it orally in more detail. Written expression practises pupils’ usage of grammar, vocabulary, correct register and ability to communicate with ease. It will be mainly set for homework, and our teachers will explain how to organise texts in class, giving students a variety of examples and templates they can base their work on.

Our objectives

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for referring to language ability. It defines language skill on a six-point scale, from A1 for beginners, up to C2 for those who have complete control of a language. Detailed below are the specific abilities of pupils who reach levels A1-C2 in any of the languages offered.

A1 users can

  • Communicate in everyday situations with common expressions and basic vocabulary to meet their immediate needs.
  • Introduce themselves and others, and ask and answer questions about personal details.
  • Interact in a simple way when the other person cooperates by talking slowly and clearly.
  • Understand simple phrases and frequently used expressions.

A2 users can

  • Communicate in simple and routine tasks that require a straightforward and direct exchange of information.
  • Describe aspects of their background, environment and matters concerning their immediate needs in basic terms.
  • Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, places of interest, employment, etc.).

B1 users can

  • Cope with most situations that might arise when travelling in areas where the language is used.
  • Describe experiences, events, wishes and aspirations, justify opinions or explain plans.
  • Understand the main points of clear texts in standard language about topics which they are familiar with, e.g. work, study or leisure.
  • Produce simple, coherent text on topics they are familiar with or in which they have personal interest.

B2 users can

  • Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity, that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite achievable without strain for either participant.
  • Understand the main ideas of complex text, on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of expertise.
  • Produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain their opinion on an issue, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

C1 users can

  • Express themselves fluently and spontaneously, without much obvious searching for expressions.
  • Use language flexibly and effectivelyfor social, academic and professional purposes.
  • Understand a wide range of challenging, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning.
  • Produce clear, well-structured and detailed text on difficult subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

C2 users can

  • Express themselves very fluently, accurately and spontaneously, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
  • Understand almost everything they hear or read with ease.
  • Summarize information and arguments from different spoken and written sources, and present them logically and concisely.
