Are you familiar with terms like ‘stock exchange’, ‘bookkeeping’, ‘yield’ or ‘taxation’?  Would you feel comfortable in a meeting with financiers or economists communicating in English?  Do you know how to read and interpret an annual report or a balance sheet?  Do you consider the Financial Times, Yahoo! Finance, The Economist or Reuters Business unintelligible?

Because of the global economy and the open relationships people and companies have  around the world, knowledge of English as the de facto language is not just an option nowadays, but a necessity.    To truly succeed in this field internationally, the ability to cope with its specific terminology is vital.

We’re not going to teach you any more about economics or finance than you already know, but we are going to teach you to use your knowledge in a multinational environment.  You’ll see a variety of financial information in English to learn from, as well as achieving spoken and written fluency for this professional context.

  • Confidence, fluency and accuracy when communicating in English with colleagues and clients in both professional and informal environments in a financial setting.
  • General and social English language skills.
  • Written proficiency in a range of financial contexts.
  • Knowledge, vocabulary and technical abilities to make you into a specialist in financial English, focusing on specific financial areas such as banking, accountancy, transactions and audits.
  • Professional communication skills such as negotiating, presenting, and writing emails and reports.
  • Awareness of intercultural issues and ‘global English’.

Our Financial English course is taught on our platform using digital resources to make the most of technology in order to facilitate learning. Material to use in class or for homework will be posted to the pupils’ area on our website for students to access at any time.

Oral expression: We prioritise communication skills so that pupils will be able to hold their own in a financial working environment. By practising speaking and listening directly in the target language as much as possible, they will train their ear to native accents and learn correct pronunciation.  We encourage group discussions as much as possible on a range of relevant topics, and will set different oral tasks or simulations of possible work scenarios for them to complete.
Listening comprehension: Pupils will listen to and watch both formal and informal financial recordings and videos to improve their skills and practise the financial terminology appropriate to their level.
Grammar and vocabulary: We explain vocabulary using clear lists, definitions and examples, with practical and fun exercises to test pupils’ assimilation and ability to put it into practice.
Reading comprehension: Reading tasks related to the financial sector will further check this assimilation, and students will complete exercises to assess their comprehension of the text.
Written expression: Written expression practises pupils’ usage of the grammar and vocabulary necessary to communicate accurately in finance, as well as their use of the correct register.  Our teachers will explain how to organise written texts in class, giving students a variety of examples and templates they can base their work on.

Pupils will take a level test at the beginning of the course (including an oral assessment) to place them in the correct group according to their ability, as well as at the end of the course to evaluate their progress.

  • Talking Figures: Types of numbers.
  • Accounting Basics: Company law, bookkeeping, cash flow, financial statements, etc.
